Artificial intelligence in business management
Teoh T., Goh Y., Springer International Publishing, Singapore, 2023. 383 pp. Type: Book (9789819945573)
Date Reviewed: Apr 17 2024

As artificial intelligence (AI) gains momentum there are both growing concerns such as deepfakes and advantages such as the high availability of virtual agents, consistent results, increased productivity, and so on. AI programs imitate human cognitive skills that include learning, reasoning, self-correction, and creativity.

Complex tasks executed by human beings are increasingly covered by AI applications via their machine learning capacities. AI can stimulate creativity in machines and create/generate content like text, audio, video, program code, movies, fake images, and so on. Part 1 guides the reader though the basics of the AI machine learning methodologies and foundations. It looks at classification, regression, clustering, and anomaly detection algorithms.

This book is intended for business management professionals looking to use the power of AI for human resources (HR) and operations management, business law and strategy, sales and marketing, finance, and supply chain management. Part 2 presents these various areas and highlights AI’s strengths in expense forecasting and fraud detection, for example, credit card fraud.

One of the book’s strengths is its support of self-learning. The included code snippets, figures, and data for practice exercises are well explained. A well-structured textbook, the included exercises will help readers test their knowledge and acquire practical experience. Concrete use cases are presented in the second part, along with exercises that will develop the reader’s decision-making, fraud detection, and prediction skills.

The book can be recommended for two different audiences. The first part of the book is for people wanting to learn AI programming, while the second part is well tailored to meet and/or support the needs of business management professionals. The latter could also learn the fundamentals in Part 1.
