What every engineer and computer scientist should know: the biggest contributor to happiness
Picard R. Communications of the ACM64 (12):40-42,2021.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Jul 25 2022

Obviously, people in this world go through periods of happiness and unhappiness. But do computer engineers and scientists really understand the factors that account for true happiness in daily life? Perhaps there are useful features for incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) techniques into futuristic systems to enhance happiness. Picard, in this edifying and thrilling viewpoint, chronicles some philosophies that might contribute to happiness as people continue to interact with computerized systems.

But how should engineers be incorporating positive human relationships into future computerized systems? The author clearly recommends principles for engineering future systems that might promote happiness: (1) valuable feedback, (2) intelligent error detection in conversations, and (3) constructive active user participation. The succinct viewpoint clearly details the recommendations for incorporating these principles into future systems.

I strongly recommend this article to practitioners in healthcare and AI. I must also confess that this timely read continues to motivate me to search the literature for evidence of happiness, aspirations, and success in life.
